Ellen comes to EDASC with a background in communications, marketing and fund development. She spent a decade as a journalist. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and Political Science from Central Washington University, she started at the Skagit Valley Herald before moving onto the Whidbey News-Times. For two decades she thrived as a freelance writer, publishing in statewide and regional tourism magazines, and writing for public agencies and nonprofits. She also ran a consultancy, Hiatt Studios, creating strategic communication plans and providing websites to clients. Most recently, she was Communications & Development Director for Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, a role that her brought her back to Skagit County, where she once worked in the bulb and spinach seed fields as a high school student, where so many young people learned hard work in Skagit County.
