Startup School returns with accelerated timeline, new local speakers

A Spanish-language cohort of EDASC’s entrepreneurial training program, Startup School, begins Oct. 6.

New this year, the program’s 12 sessions will take place at an accelerated pace, over just six weeks instead of 12 weeks.  

“Our hope is that this accelerated format will allow business owners to get the knowledge they need and apply it right away,” EDASC’s Equitable Economic Development Manager Juan Morales said.  

Startup School’s curriculum continues to be provided by the My Own Business Institute (MOBI), part of Santa Clara University. Thanks to an endowment to the university, EDASC can provide Startup School at no cost.

“We are grateful for our three-year partnership with EDASC and our shared commitment to making entrepreneurship education accessible to Spanish-speaking business owners,” said Trish Kalbas-Schmidt, senior director of the My Own Business Institute at Santa Clara University.  

“MOBI’s Spanish-language curriculum is translated by Spanish speakers who understand business concepts and MOBI’s curriculum, helping to ensure the content is accurately and appropriately conveyed for our Spanish-speaking audience. It is exciting to see EDASC bring that education to life through Startup School and the expertise of its local community.”

Most sessions will include a guest speaker from the community. These local subject matter experts will share their experience in topics such as accounting, microfinance and marketing. All presentations will be delivered in Spanish.

“We have an invaluable wealth of knowledge in our community,” Morales said, “and we are grateful that so many of our Latino professionals are willing to share their expertise and wisdom.”
