The Mount Vernon Farmers Market Adds to Skagit’s Bounty This Summer

When the Mount Vernon Farmers Market celebrated opening day on May 16, over 50 vendors enticed crowds to Riverwalk Plaza to savor the very best (and most delicious!) that Skagit has to offer. All locally grown. All locally made.

Awaiting folks from across the area were local Skagit honey in unique flavors such as blackberry and fireweed, crisp produce grown by fifth-generation farmers, containers bursting with plump blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries fresh from Skagit Valley, sweet treats such as chewy oat cookies, honey + whole wheat bread, and cinnamon rolls, and an array of handcrafted products made by our talented, local artisans.

The Biggest Season Yet

This year, Mount Vernon Farmers Market has the most vendors they’ve had in years, including newcomers to the market: a beef and pork farmer, a salmon company, dirty sodas, more unique art, and so much more!

“This season is definitely bringing a fresh new energy,” says Tia Entrikin, executive director of the Mount Vernon Farmers Market.

That new energy is reinforced by the return of live music to the market most Saturdays this season. “We know this is a crowd favorite and something we love to provide to the community,” Entrikin says.

Ensuring Community Access to Healthy Foods

Equally as important as the emphasis on locally grown foods and handcrafted products is the mission that underscores the Mount Vernon Farmers Market.

The Mount Vernon Farmers Market operates three dedicated food access programs to provide nutritional assistance to the community.

Through a partnership with the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, qualifying shoppers can receive funds directly at the market. Additionally, the market's relationship with United General allows them to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to eligible participants through the ThriveRx program.

The market's largest food access initiative is the SNAP Market Match program. Through this program, the market matches EBT benefits dollar-for-dollar with no upward limit. For every dollar a customer withdraws from their EBT card, the market provides an additional dollar to spend on free fruits and vegetables, meaning a shopper can withdraw $10 and receive $20, or withdraw $100 and receive $200. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity for community members to stretch their food budgets, support local farmers, and eat healthy. The Market Match program is also supported by the Sedro-Woolley and Anacortes markets.

In 2025, over $4,800 worth of vegetables and fruits were provided free of charge at the Mount Vernon market, bringing greater access to fresh produce to households around the county.
