Local ranch supported by COVID-19 grant program
Tuesday, October 20, 2020
Skiyou Ranch, a farm in Sedro-Woolley, was awarded a $5,000 grant during the first phase of the Skagit County Small Business Grant Program, funded through the CARES Act and administered by EDASC. We are profiling some of the businesses who have received local COVID-19 relief grants to update the public on how these funds are being used and to demonstrate the importance of supporting and strengthening Skagit County businesses.
About Skiyou Ranch
Skiyou Ranch is a Fourth Generation Family farm in the Skagit Valley, raising 100% Grass Fed Certified Organic Beef. They became WSDA Organic certified in 2000 and raise their animals just like the generations before them - with sustainable and humane practices that include being grass fed from start to finish. They take pride in their approach to cattle raising and their ability to sell their products to the local community.
Owner Tarie Benson said, “As a Fourth Generation farm in Skagit County, this is and will always be home. I love the opportunity to have joined the Genuine Skagit Valley program with all the other homestead farmers. It has great people and great community support. Skagit County has always been there for the local farmers when help is needed.”
How they used grant funds
Skiyou Ranch applied for grant funding to help sustain their expenses due to the loss of their wholesale accounts amid the COVID-19 lockdowns and phased reopenings.
Benson says the grant has helped keep her farmers market locations open while hiring an additional employee to help.
It’s important to support local businesses
“The community has been so supportive in buying my products online and at the local farmers markets,” Benson said. “I am grateful for each and everyone who came out amidst the COVID-19 mandates to help all the farmers in these trying times. We are truly blessed to have a great community.”
