Construction Has Begun on the New Marine Skills Center in Anacortes
Thu, Oct 15, 2009
The Port of Anacortes, along with the Northwest Career and Technical Academy (NCTA) is using a portion of the port's property for the new Marine Skills Center located on R Avenue in Anacortes. On September 17, a groundbreaking ceremony took place at the future site of the skills center.
The Marine Skills Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2010, will provide technical training for up to 120 high school, college, and adult students pursuing an education in the marine trades. Members of the Commission say that the classes on fabrication and other technical skills that will be offered could carry over into non-marine trades. Other public benefits derived from the Skills Center will include increased parking and a conference center facility.
In other news, the Port of Anacortes will be welcoming Anthony's restaurant to the Port. The Port signed a lease with Anthony's on October 14th to build a new 14,700 square foot restaurant on the site, facing the Cap Sante Trailer Boat launch and Boat Haven promenade, and will develop the remainder of the property behind the restaurant, approximately 42,000 square feet, for parking. Anthony's has had an ongoing dialog with the Port for several years and recently approached the Port in earnest regarding the possibility of locating a restaurant at the Boat Haven.
Bob Hyde, Port Executive Director, stated, "Anthony's Restaurant is exactly what we were hoping for in an anchor tenant for the Boat Haven. It will bring the community and tourists by land and sea to Anacortes. We are proud of the fact that Anthony's sees Anacortes as a place they want to be. Thanks go out to Mayor Maxwell and the City of Anacortes, as well as Mitch Everton and our Chamber of Commerce for helping with this opportunity."
Mayor Dean Maxwell noted, "Anthony's will be a great addition to Anacortes with their unique northwest dining experience. We are known for having a wonderful restaurant community; Anthony's presence will add to and enhance the Anacortes dining experience. The jobs and the spin off benefits of having them here in our community will be a very beneficial and welcome addition."
Speaking for Anthony's, Project Manager Jeff Arnot said, "Anthony's is looking forward to being part of and bringing jobs to your community." Anthony's will provide over 80 new jobs in Anacortes.
